About the Georgia Room

The Georgia Room, located in the Switzer Library (formerly known as the Central Library), is a genealogical and historical Special Collection. The Georgia Room collection serves the needs of a broad spectrum of users with diverse informational and educational pursuits. We welcome everyone who wishes to use these special resources to search for ancestors or research the history of Cobb County, Georgia, and beyond.

While the Georgia Room collection is a reference collection and does not circulate, the room is open to everyone who wishes to use the collection. Appointments are not required, and our helpful staff is available for assistance with research projects. The purpose of the Georgia Room is to develop and maintain an in-depth collection of materials having lasting historical and genealogical value to support the informational, educational, and research needs of its users.

History of the Georgia Room (Back to Top)

The Georgia Room was founded in 1970 through the generous bequest of Miss Virginia Vanstone Crosby in memory of her father, Charles Mayo Crosby. Miss Crosby was an active community member and the first Marietta woman to run for mayor of the city. Since its inception, many have contributed to the growth and development of the Georgia Room collection. In 2007 the Georgia Room was greatly expanded as a result of a generous donation from the Library Foundation.

Collection Overview (Back to Top)

The Georgia Room has an extensive collection of historical and genealogical materials on Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia, and over half of the rest of the fifty states. Most of the materials in the Georgia Room collection are in book form, although other formats are included, such as photos, maps, and microform.

The Georgia Room has a wealth of resources for individuals looking for information about their family’s history. The Georgia Room does not purchase individual family histories, but does accept them as donations. Our knowledgeable staff members are available to help you with your genealogy research and while Georgia Room staff do not conduct genealogical research for individuals, they do assist in research projects.

Any outside research requests should be directed to georgiac@cobbcat.org. Because of limited staff, Georgia Room employees will spend no longer than one hour on any single mail, fax, electronic, or telephone requests. These requests should generally be restricted to straightforward reference (obituary requests, etc.). Requests will not be researched over the phone, they will be written down along with the name, phone number, and email of the researcher. Requests will be handled as soon as possible in the order in which they were received.
