Hello, friends!

Happy New Year!! No, I am not making a joke, yesterday really was the start of a new year. Chinese New Year! 2013 is the Year of the Snake!

Chinese New Year is different from New Year’s Day because the Chinese use a different calendar than we do in America. The calendar used in America, called the Gregorian Calendar, is a solar calendar. That means that the days of the week and the months of the year are based on the sun. The calendar used for Chinese New Year is a lunar calendar. That means that the days of the week and the months of the year are based on the moon. Solar is another word for sun, and lunar is another word for moon!

I have a winner this week to honor Chinese New Year! It is called Cat and rat by Ed Young. This book tells the story of the animals who became part of the Chinese zodiac. 2013 is the Year of the Snake, but there are eleven other animals, too! Did you know that? Sadly, a whistlepig is not one of the Chinese zodiac animals. Can you guess which animals are?

I hope that you will read this book in honor of Chinese New Year! 新年快乐! Xin nian kuai le!

Happy reading!

Your friend,

Willard
