Every Monday, we’ll see what book Dewey is reading! Over the summer, all Dewey’s books will be nonfiction science books in honor of the Fizz Boom Read Summer Reading Program! And since Dewey is named in honor of Melville Dewey, the creator of the Dewey Decimal System of Classification, we will learn a bit about how the Dewey Decimal System works, too!

So, what’s Dewey reading today…?

Dewey’s reading Wild Animal Atlas: Earth’s Astonishing Animals and Where They Live! This book’s call number is J 591.9 Wild. Librarians read the call number as J five ninety-one point nine (not five hundred ninety-one point nine). The number 591 tells us that this book is about a specific topic in the history of animals while the .9 tells us that the specific topic is the treatment of animals by continent. This book’s call number does not contain the author’s last name like other nonfiction call numbers. Instead it contains the first word of the book’s title. That is because this book was not published with an author but was instead published under the name of a company (National Geographic).
