All summer long we’ve learned about the nonfiction science books that Dewey’s been reading. But Dewey loves to read all kinds of different books! You can find picture books, easy reader books, chapter books, and nonfiction books at the library.

So, what’s Dewey reading today…?

Dewey’s reading The Penderwicks: a summer tale of four sisters, two rabbits, and a very interesting boy by Jeanne Birdsall! This book’s call number is J Birdsal. The J stands for “juvenile”. J books are chapter books. Chapter books are shelved in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. Yes, just like picture books and easy reader books! Only nonfiction books are shelved in order by Dewey Decimal number.

Did you notice that the author’s last name in the call number is missing the last letter? That’s because call numbers can be no more than seven letters long. If the author’s last name is longer than that, the call number stops after the first seven letters.
