Switzer Library

History

A 1987 bond issue provided the funds for building this location just off Marietta Square, formerly known as the Central Library, which opened in September 1989. Before 1989, the library had been in temporary quarters at the old Marietta Post Office since 1963. The new library provided much needed space. The current location houses not only the main library for Cobb County Public Library, but also the Library System’s administration and support services.

On July 23, 2013, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners renamed the Central Library the Charles D. Switzer Public Library in honor of the longtime library trustee.

Switzer Library is home to The Georgia Room, a local history and genealogical collection of over 15,000 items.

The library underwent renovations in 2019 which created adult and teen makerspaces, a dedicated teen space, a family computer room, a new children's programming room, and an outdoor plaza with garden area. The renovated library boasts a larger Georgia Room and houses the Windy Hill Library, an inclusive library serving those with special needs. The library reopened on June 1, 2021.
