Story by Erika Ruthman
Central CCPLS

As part of a statewide energy-conservation effort, the Cobb County Public Library System (CCPLS) now offers the Kill-A-Watt Energy Detector Toolkit to borrow.

The Kill-A-Watt toolkit is used to gauge the efficiency and energy consumption of large and small household appliances. With the Kill-A-Watt toolkit, people can read the kilowatt computations to estimate costs of using appliances by the hour, day, week, month, or even the year. Just plug the device into the wall and then plug the appliance into the monitor.

“By understanding what it costs to run an appliance, Georgians can take practical steps to conserve energy or upgrade to more energy-efficient appliances if necessary,” Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority Executive (GEFA) Director Phil Foil said.

Individuals may also be able to identify ‘phantom’ energy consumption, or appliances that retract energy even when not in use. Common energy-eaters include outdated appliances or office equipment such as computers and phone chargers. Checking-out the toolkit is just like checking-out a book and is free with a Cobb County library card. Toolkits are available a week at a time and can be placed on reserve, just as one would reserve a library book. A 10 cent fine is charged for each day the monitor is overdue, and replacement cost is $45 for a lost Kill-A-Watt toolkit.

Each toolkit contains an instruction book with a step-by-step process for using the monitor. While users can track and calculate the results alone, online tools are also available on the GEFA Web page at, www.gefa.org/index.aspx?page=481 .

This program is part of a larger initiative of Gov. Sonny Perdue’s, ‘Energy Challenge,’ a goal for state government to reduce energy usage by 15 percent before 2020. For information on checking-out a toolkit call the CCPLS at, (770) 528-2321

Cobb Library Foundation Hosts Jazz Night

The Cobb County Library Foundation presents, ‘An Enchanted Evening of Jazz,’ Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Strand Theatre in Marietta. Jazz greats, Freddy Cole and Dwight Andrews will delight audiences.

Headlining this event: Freddy Cole. He doesn't apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat ‘King’ Cole. There are certain unmistakable similarities.

He plays piano, guitar, upright bass, and sings just like Nat. Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, and jazzier than ever. Through his talents, Cole has emerged from the awesome shadow cast by his elder brother. Cole's career continues to ascend as he has moved into the front ranks of America's homegrown art form with a style and musical sophistication all his own.

The Reverend Dr. Dwight Andrews is the Senior Minister at the First Congregational Church and an Associate Professor of Music Theory at Emory University. Dr. Andrews is founder of the Atlanta Jazz Chorus and has numerous Broadway musical and film credits. He was the first Quincy Jones Visiting Professor of African American Music at Harvard University, Artistic Director of the 1998 National Black Arts Festival, and serves as Scholar-Artist in-Residence at the High Museum of Atlanta.

Admission is $85 and the VIP admission is $150. VIP admission includes: reserved seating, an ‘afterglow’ reception, and meet the artists session. Get tickets from the Strand box office, through Paypal at, www.cobbcat.org/cobb_lib_foundation.htm or via mail by sending a check to the Cobb County Library Foundation: 266 Roswell St., Marietta, GA 30060. Cobb County Public Library Staff Support Troops
Story by Erika Ruthman
CCPLS

The, ‘Top It Off for Troops’ care-package drive ended with a ‘packing party’ at the Cobb County Public Library System, Aug. 28. During the ‘packing party’ staff stuffed care packages for service members, at the Central Library in Marietta. More than $200 in merchandise was donated by staff, throughout the library system, including items such as snacks, games and magazines. The packages will be shipped to military stationed in Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan — warzones — in time for Thanksgiving. Dozens of services members will be recipients of the library care packages.

“I thoroughly enjoyed putting the packages together for our service men and women; we had a camaraderie of purpose,” Janice Gillpatrick, CCPLS human resources representative, said. “After all they have given up for us, some even their lives, that is the least we can do for them.”

Capt. Scott Moore, 335TH SC (T)(PROV) Headquarters and Headquarters company commander, said the support for service members has been “superb.”

“Their hard work and dedication helps to keep the morale of this unit very high,” Moore said. “My soldiers and I are thankful for all of their contributions.”
