Starting in early April, the Sibley Library in Marietta will undergo a major renovation. The project includes the reconfiguration of library space to improve the delivery of technology training, adult education and workforce development resources.

The library, located at 1539 South Cobb Drive near the Austell Road intersection, will be closed from Monday, April 4 through Saturday, May 7. Regular hours will resume on Monday, May 9.

Serving the Fair Oaks area of Marietta near the western side of Dobbins Air Reserve Base since 1967, the library has long been a center for people seeking assistance with job searches and workforce skills training, said Sibley Branch Manager Joseph Buadoo. The 2900-square-foot library is near the Cobb Adult Education Center, which provides training and test preparation services.

“The library renovation represents a repurposing of the space to meet the needs of our patrons striving for employment and educational opportunities,” Buadoo said.

The Sibley Library will continue to have library materials for children and adults as well as offer programs for all ages, said Alexandra Beswick, central region manager for the Cobb County library system.

The library is a community focal point and serves many patrons relying on public transportation to reach jobs, schools and shopping destinations, Beswick said.

“Sibley has long been a neighborhood library,” Beswick said. “We look forward to Sibley remaining a viable community resource.”

The project includes the installation of new electrical and computer cable systems, interior and exterior lighting, ceiling, carpet, customer service desk, replacement of double doors, and an enclosure for a computer and literacy training area. The project is funded by a Georgia Public Library Services’ Major Renovation and Repair Grant and the 2011 Cobb County Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). The cost projection is less than $200,000, with the Cobb County Property Management Department conducting the renovation.

Hours of operation the Sibley Library are Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The library is closed Thursday through Friday and Sunday. The two libraries in Marietta closest to Sibley – both open for regular hours during the Sibley renovation – are the Switzer Library at 266 Roswell Street and the Stratton Library at 1100 Powder Springs Road.
