  Catalog:

  Link to CobbCat

In Quick Search, you do not have to enter your account number and PIN in order to search the catalog.

Cardholders may log into CobbCat at the outset of a search session for convenient access to full services such as placing reserves, obtaining passwords for databases, reviewing accounts and renewing materials during the entire session. If you plan on placing quite a few reserves, it’s a good idea to log in now so that you will not have to re-enter your account number and PIN for each transaction.

   Searching For Materials

a.   To begin a search, type a term in the search box under Quick Search and select:

  • Words or Phrase

  • Author

  • Title

  • Subject

  • Series

  • Periodicals Title

b.   Select a library branch in the Library box to display that library first.

c.   Your result may be a single item record or a list of item records.  The record provides the call number for finding the item on the shelf, a description of the item and the number of copies and whether or not they are currently checked out.

       Placing Reserves

a.   To place a reserve (hold) on an item, first locate it in Cobbcat.  Check the item record carefully to ensure that you are choosing the desired format or edition.  The catalog may contain multiple entries for the same title, with some representing large print books, audio books on cassette and CD, and even electronic books.  Once you have identified the desired title and format, click on DETAILS.  If the item you want is not in Cobbcat, please contact a library staff member for possible options.
(Links to libraries, hours and phone numbers.)

b.   Click on the red PLACE RESERVE link on the left side of the page.

c.   You must log in now with your account number and PIN if you have not done so at the outset of the search session and choose the library location for pick up.

d.   The system will tell you if your “hold” has been successfully placed.

  • Reserves may not be placed on items that do not check out such as Reference items and items located in the Georgia Room.
  • Reserves may not be place on electronic books, databases or other non-deliverable items.

e.   To review your holds, Log into the COBBCAT and click on My Account in the blue banner at the top of the page.   Click on Review My Account to see the items you have on reserve.

  • Your estimated position in the hold queue is provided if other people have reserves on the same item
  • You may cancel these holds at any time by clicking in the box next to the title(s) and click on Cancel Selected Holds
  • If you wish to change the pick up library, please call any of our libraries and ask for staff assistance.

            f.    You will be notified by telephone when the item is available for pick-up.

  • Expect to wait at least 3-5 days, depending on availability and other factors, for items to be pulled and set aside in your name.
  • If you expect to pick up materials within 24-48 hours of placing the reserve, please call libraries showing available copies and arrange for the item(s) to be located and set aside for you.  (Links to libraries, hours and phone numbers.)
  • Materials will be held for three days from the date they are set-aside for you.  If you need additional time to pick up the material, please contact library staff.
  • Library policy requires that you either pick up the material in person or arrange with library staff ahead of time to have the material picked up by someone else.
   Circulation

How to get a library card

  • Cards are free to all Cobb County residents as well as property or business owners.
  • Visit any Cobb County Library location with ID showing your current street address and fill out an application.  It just takes a minute.
  • Children 12 and under must come in with a parent or guardian who will sign the application and provide ID.
  • Cards are available to non-County residents for $20.00 for two years for the first card and $5.00 for additional family members.

Circulation Periods

Videos check out for one week, all other items check out for three weeks.

Circulation Limits

Patrons may have up to 75 items checked out at a time, not to exceed a value of $2,000.

Within the limit of 75, there can be no more than 20 each of videotapes, DVDs, audiobooks, or CDs.

Renewals

  • All items can be renewed twice except when:
"Your account is blocked" [Blocked] or
"Someone else has requested the item"
  • Items can be renewed online.
  • To avoid overdue fines, don’t wait until the last minute to renew – you never know when someone else may request something you have checked out.

To renew items online, select My Account.  Log in using your card number and PIN.  If you enter your card number and PIN when you first logon to CobbCat, you do not have to keep entering it for each transaction.  Select My Account and then Renew My Materials.  Just put a check in the box next to each item you want to renew.  If you want to renew everything, there is a box at the top for that.  You can also renew from Review My Account by selecting “Click here to Renew titles.”

Fines

  • The fine for overdue materials is 10¢ a day with a maximum of $5.00 per item.
  • When items are overdue, your account will show the fine you would owe if the items were turned in today.  The fine can’t actually be paid until the items are returned.
  • Accounts with a balance of $10.00 or more in accrued or estimated fines are blocked.  [Blocked]

  Library Privileges

All card-holders are entitled to the same privileges except that patrons under 17 must have parental permission to use the Internet and may have only filtered access to the Internet.

Library cards expire every two years and can be renewed in person at any Cobb County Library locations by presenting ID with the current street address.

A library account is Blocked (privileges suspended) if $10.00 or more is owed on the account.  Possible charges include fines for materials returned late, replacement fees for lost or damaged materials, Interlibrary Loan charges, or estimated fines for overdue materials.  Estimated fines cannot be paid, as the overdue item must be returned and the exact fine calculated first.

Reference Librarians

Reference Librarians assist library users in locating particular titles or finding general information.

  • They provide instruction in research technique, the use of the library, the computer catalog, online resources and other specific information sources.
  • They provide tours, orientations or special programs for individuals or groups by appointment.

Reference Collections

  • The Central Library houses the most extensive collection of reference works, directories, and periodicals in the system. The objective is to provide more advanced materials in areas where there is significant community interest.
    (
Link to Central address, hours, phone numbers.)
  • The Georgia Room houses the only research collection in the Cobb County Public Library System, consisting of local history and genealogy resources.
    (Link to Georgia Room)
  • The regional branch library collections contain some of the more advanced materials as in the Central Library collection, but the primary focus is to provide general or introductory material on a wide variety of subjects.
(Link to Regional Libraries:  Mountain View and West Cobb)
  • Branch collections provide only introductory or general information about a limited number of subjects.  (Link)
  • All libraries have access to a number of online databases that expand the information available in each location.

 Telephone Reference

  • If you are unable to visit the library in person, you may telephone for reference assistance at (770) 528-2346.
  • Library staff members are not able to perform in-depth research, but will search a limited number of resources and provide brief answers by telephone.
  • Please be aware that staff members give priority to serving users in the library before answering telephone reference questions.
  • (Links to libraries, hours and phone numbers)
  • Telecommunication Device for the Deaf-Contact the Central Library Reference Desk at (770) 528-2377

  Fax Services

  • Library documents or photocopies may be faxed to a home or business for a charge of $.25 per page.
  • The person requesting the fax must have a library membership in good standing as the charges will be posted to the account.  If he or she does not have a library membership, materials may be faxed to a more convenient Cobb County Library location where charges may be paid when the documents are picked up.
  • A Copyright Statement agreeing to fair use limitations must be signed and returned to the library.
  • There is a limit of two articles or 10 pages.
  • The library staff will make every attempt to provide the material within 24 hours of the request.
  • The library does not deliver tax forms by fax.
