The Cobb Library Foundation is the fundraising arm of the Cobb County Public Library System. It raises funds for special projects throughout the 17-branch library system, and last year it raised $30,000 for the Georgia Room expansion at the Central Library in Marietta.
Alton Brown, a Cobb resident, spent a decade working as a cinematographer and video director. Convinced he could improve the dull and uninformative cooking shows he often watched, he left the film business and moved to Vermont to train at the New England Culinary Institute. He then created the Food Network’s “Good Eats,” a smart and entertaining food show that blends wit with wisdom, history with pop culture, and science with common cooking sense. The show was named by Time Magazine as “one of six shows worth their salt,” and called Brown “the MacGyver of mackerel.”
Brown’s first book, “I’m Just Here for the Food,” (2002), has sold over 300,000 copies to date. He has followed that writing with two more versions of the book (2004 and 2006), featuring recipes and how food works. “Alton Brown’s Gear for Your Kitchen,” his homage to tools and gadgetry, was published in 2003 and is packed with advice and tips on all the “hardware” you need in the kitchen. It includes 25 recipes and a six-month plan to overhaul your kitchen.
Recently, Alton Brown and his beloved motorcycle hit the open road to film, “Feasting on Asphalt,” a nostalgic trip across the U.S. to rediscover the places and stories of great American road food. The series ran on the Food Network in 2006 and will be followed by a book of the same name to be released in 2008.
