African American History Month »
African American History Month, also called Black History Month, is a month-long commemoration of African American history and achievement that takes place each February in the United States. It was begun in 1976. Read more in the online Encyclopedia Britannica.
In 1981, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) cosponsored the first Joint Congressional Resolution proclaiming a “Women’s History Week.” In 1987, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to expand the celebration to the entire month of March. Read more »
