The Scholastic Summer Reading Road Trip will be welcoming children’s author Carmen Agra Deedy at the Switzer Library in Marietta on Friday, July 21st from 10 am until noon. She will be signing books and answering questions for her fans. Her newest book is The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet!
Agra Deedy has been writing children’s books for more than two decades. Over the years she has won many awards for her stories, including the Jane Addams Peace Association Book Award, the Christopher Award, the Parent’s Choice Gold Award, and many others.
Her first published work, Agatha’s Feather Bed: Not Just Another Wild Goose Story teaches the lesson that “everything comes from something”. Her writing style is filled with lighthearted word play and fun facts that everyone can learn from.
The Library Dragon, a witty story about a dragon who loves books so much she guards them in the school library was selected for the Georgia National Book festival in 2003 and made the Georgia Top 25 Reading list. It was so popular among young readers that it spawned a sequel, Return of the Library Dragon.
Martina the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale is an award-winning retelling of an old Latino folktale that follows a green cockroach as she tries to navigate through life and love while trying to remain true to her culture. The illustrations and tongue-in-cheek humor help tell the tale to both children and adults alike.
The Yellow Star: The Legend of King Christian X of Denmark won critical acclaims for the blend of history, fiction, and education about the persecution the Jewish community faced from the Nazis. Its simple story-telling teaches children about important life lessons in a way that they can understand.
The Cheshire Cheese Cat: A Dickens of a Tale, her first venture into chapter books for children, tells the tale of tomcat who befriends a mouse in ye olde London. The two strike up a bargain that takes them on all sorts of adventures that prove that anyone can be friends.
In addition to Agra Deedy’s appearance and book signing, the Scholastic Summer Reading Road Trip will also feature crafts, games, photo ops, and more fun activities. Sandra Markle, author more than 200 non-fiction children’s books, will also appear at the July 21st event. RSVP here. For more information contact us at (770) 528-2320.
