Media Smart Youth Camp, a free week-long interactive series for tweens on the interplay between the media world and health, starts Monday at South Cobb Regional Library. Trained facilitators from Cobb & Douglas Public Health will lead the series from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm on Monday through Friday.
Participants will learn to think critically about interacting with media, create their own media samples, learn about proper nutrition and physical activity, and enjoy healthy snacks and physical activity breaks throughout each day’s three-hour session.
Registration is required and space is limited to 15 participants who are 11-13 years old. Participants will need to commit to attend the entire week, from July 11 through July 15.
Today more than ever before, young people are bombarded with ads from various forms of media, and the majority of these ads are for processed, sugary, and fast foods. When combined with a more sedentary lifestyle, it is no surprise that rates of childhood obesity have increased more than threefold in the last 30 years, according to the American Medical Association.
Register for this program by calling (678) 398-5831 or stop by the library’s Adult Reference desk. South Cobb Regional Library, 805 Clay Road, Mableton, GA 30126.
