Hattie G. Wilson LibraryOn Tuesday, January 8, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved the closing of the Hattie G. Wilson Library, moving staff and resources to the Central Library, and naming the Central Library’s Youth Services Department the Hattie Gaines Wilson Youth Services Department in honor of Mrs. Wilson’s 33 years of service. The Hattie G. Wilson Library’s final day of service will be Thursday, January 17, 2013.

The Hattie G. Wilson Library was opened in 1947 as a branch of the Clarke Library to provide library service to the African American community in Marietta. The library was located in the Fort Hill Community and was originally called the Fort Hill Branch; the library was renamed for Mrs. Hattie Gaines Wilson in 1986 in honor of the librarian who had worked tirelessly to provide library services to the underserved African American population in Marietta.

The Cobb County Public Library System plans to dedicate the Youth Services Department at the Central Library in honor of Mrs. Hattie Gaines Wilson at a special ceremony on Saturday, February 9 at 1 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
