Cobb County Public Library System staff members donated about 100 toy stuffed animals to a local 2014 Christmas toy drive. Greg Hawley, a captain in the Georgia Army National Guard, recently picked up the toys at the Switzer Library in Marietta, just as he has since he started the seasonal toy drive three years ago.
The gifts are presented to children of soldiers on active duty and young people at Scottish Rite – Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Calvary Children’s Home in West Cobb, and a metro Atlanta area women’s shelter, Hawley said.
Hawley was a Cobb County Police sergeant in charge of the K9 unit when he started the stuffed animal toy drive in 2012.
For Hawley, the experience of making the rounds delivering the stuffed animals is gratifying, especially when he witnesses children reaching for the toys. “They’re happy, surprised,” he said. “You’d be amazed.”
Jonathan McKeown, Associate Director of Library Services, coordinates the collection of toys from staff members throughout the 16 Cobb library locations.
“The stuffed animal drive is turning into a tradition for the library staff,” McKeown said. “The generosity of folks is outstanding.”
