Komen for the Cure: WHEREAS: According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except for skin cancer. It is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in women; and WHEREAS: The mission of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) educates women about the importance of early detection for breast cancer. Since NBCAM's inception, mammography use has doubled, and breast cancer death rates have declined. Still, many women do not utilize physical breast exam and many women age 40 or older do not utilize mammography at regular intervals; and WHEREAS: Continued progress in the battle against breast cancer demands widespread public support for innovative programs, scientific research and education; all educators, service providers, researchers and advocacy groups are urged to work together to develop ways to educate more women about breast cancer and to ensure that all women in Georgia have access to appropriate breast cancer screening services; and WHEREAS: The greater Atlanta Susan G. Komen affiliate has raised more than $23.5 million for breast cancer research, local grassroots organizations, community agencies and support groups to help provide assistance to breast cancer patients and their families. In 2009, the Affiliate reached a record in giving, investing $2.3 million in the local community to 28 grant programs. In addition, the Affiliate also awarded $615,000 to the Komen Award and Research Grant Program; and WHEREAS: During this month-long observance, all Cobb County residents are encouraged to join in related activities and initiatives that help raise support and awareness of this serious health concern which has claimed too many lives over the years; moreover, people everywhere are called upon to raise their awareness of breast cancer and contribute to the global fight against this devastating disease; now THEREFORE: We, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, do hereby recognize October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This, the 13th day of October 2009. PRESENTATION OF PROCLAMATION IN RECOGNITION OF A MOUSTACHE GROWING CHARITY EVENT HELD EVERY YEAR TO RAISE FUNDS AWARENESS FOR THE NUMBER ONE MEN'S HEALTH ISSUE. PROSTATE CANCER: Commissioner Ott read and presented the following proclamation to Mr. Al Frazier, in recognition of the Movember fundraiser and the Prostate Cancer Foundation for its men's health awareness campaign: WHEREAS: Movember is a moustache growing charity event held every November to raise funds and awareness for men's health. Its aim is to make men's health fun by putting the Mo (Australian slang for moustache) back on the face of American men while raising some serious funds for the number one men's health issue, prostate cancer; and WHEREAS: Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in the US with one in six American men developing the disease and more than 28,000 men dying of the disease every year; and WHEREAS: At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. Participants, known as Mo Bros, then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their Mo. It culminates at the end of the month at the Gala Partes. These events will see Tom Selleck, Hulk Hogan and Borat look-a-likes battle it out for their chance to take home the prestigious Man of Movember title; and WHEREAS: While growing a Mo is left to the guys, Mo Sistas (women who support their guys or just love Mo's!) form an important part of Movember by recruiting Mo Bros, helping to raise funds and attending the highly anticipated Gala Partes; and WHEREAS: Movember is very proud to be teaming with the Prostate Cancer Foundation in the US and all donations will benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation, which will use the funds for high-impact research to find better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer; now THEREFORE: We, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, do hereby recognize the Movember fundraiser and the Prostrate Cancer Foundation for its men's health awareness campaign; and we would like to encourage all men, beginning at age 40 to be screened for prostrate cancer.
