Switzer Library presents ‘Back to the Future Part II’ Movie Night! on October 21, 2015 – the exact date Emmett “Doc” Brown and Marty McFly arrived in the future in their flying DeLorean time machine. Doc brings Marty and Jennifer to October 21, 2015 to save their future family. The Wednesday program is slated for 6:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.
The comedy was released in the U.S. on November 22, 1989. It features flying cars, artificial intelligence, fingerprint biometrics and various gadgets. According to a recent Scientific American article, “this 1989 time-traveling comedy was spot-on about many devices that we now take for granted.”
More than how real technology compares with the movie’s gizmos of October 21st is being tested as the real date approaches. The movie predicted the Chicago Cubs would be the 2015 World Series champion. In reality, the Cubs are in the baseball playoffs for the first time since 2008, famously trying to end the drought without a Cubs World Series championship since back-to-back wins in 1907 and 1908. Or, as Sports Illustrated reports, the reality is it’s about ending “107 years of Chicago Cubs playoffs misery.” Or, not.
